He has been visiting professor in Business Strategy and International Business at the University of Michigan School of Business, Ann Arbor, later in Entrepreneurship at Cotrugli Business School in Europe. He has been Director of Doctoral Theses at HEC, Paris and has lectured in residential and executive programs at the Business Schools of the Universities of Michigan, Chicago and Duke. He is currently the Steve Aronson Chair of Strategy and Agribusiness.
He has taught "In Company" programs for Alstom Group, Walmart, Carlsberg, Coca Cola, BASF, Oracle, CEMEX, COFIA-AFP - Citibank and Chiquita. He has published more than 30 academic articles internationally, 4 books and more than 60 case studies.
His work in the consulting area is focused on business and corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions and the management of family businesses. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Directors of different companies in the fields of health, retail, oil and gas, construction and real estate.
Dr. Brenes held the positions of Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of the Government of Costa Rica during the period between May 1998 and June 2000.

Leader of the firm in the area of Family Business and Corporate Governance. He has extensive experience in matters of strategy, family businesses, corporate governance and corporate finance. He is also a member of the Boards of Directors of companies in the agro-industrial sector in Central America.
He served as Senior Visiting Researcher at the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) of INCAE on issues of competitiveness and cluster development. Invited speaker on various topics of Economics and Management at the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, Universidad Laica de Guayaquil and at INCAE. He participated as an International Lecturer on Family Business in the 1st International Management Congress for Business Multivariate, Mérida Venezuela.
He has written some cases for INCAE on strategy and agroindustry issues, documents on competitiveness and cluster development in agro-technology in different Latin American countries, he is co-author together with Dr. Esteban Brenes of two chapters of the book “ Banana Wars: The Anatomy of a Trade Dispute ”, edited by the University of Florida and Gainsville in 2002, from the article“ Anticipating conflict in family businesses ”in INCAE Magazine in 2003, from the working paper“ Family Business Structure and Succession: Critical Topics in Latin America Experience ”published in the Journal of Business Research in 2006, from the article“ Strategies to ensure the continuity of Family Businesses ”published in INCAE Magazine in May 2008.

Since 2009 he has been an expert in valuations certified by the Superintendency of Companies of Ecuador and, since 2012, he is a judicial expert certified by the Council of the Judiciary in the area of Finance and Administration.

He has 10 years of experience in multinational companies of mass consumption with an emphasis on innovation, development of new products and communication. He led several route-to-market projects and was actively involved in the merger of operations after business acquisitions. He has also participated in strategic formulation processes as well as their implementation through key initiatives and use of the Balanced Scorecard.
His managerial experience spans the areas of sales, marketing, finance, production, IT, administration, and human resources. It has launched e-commerce platforms and digital marketing campaigns. He has also led ERP implementation processes such as SAP and Microsoft Dynamics as well as management information systems (Business Intelligence).
He has coordinated turnaround processes for companies in very weakened situations and has directed Quality Management programs resulting in ISO 9001 certification. He is a specialist in the development of sales channels with extensive knowledge in North and South America. He has developed business models for emerging companies and family businesses in transformation processes.
He was a Founding Partner of Emerge Capital, a company that manages a Private Equity fund in Central America, with resources from the IDB and the development institutions of the governments of England, Holland and Norway. He has been the administrator of said fund for 10 years.
He was a partner of Aureos Capital, Administrator of Capital Funds in emerging countries for 12 years, where he invested in companies in Central America. Aureos Capital had operations in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia. Aureos managed close to $1,000 million in different funds in those regions.
He was an Executive of CDC Group PLC (formerly Commonwealth Development Corporation, a development institution of the British government) in Central America and the Dominican Republic and in South East Asia. With CDC, he was a director of several companies in the agro-industrial sector as well as companies that produce electricity. Throughout his career he has been involved in service companies, mass consumption, the plastic industry, tourism, real estate projects and retail.
MBA from National University with emphasis in Banking and Finance and a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from UACA, Costa Rica. During his career he has taken a large number of courses on valuations, negotiation and Private Equity.
